It’s time for Layering Lesson #2! Today I’m going to show you how to layer with outerwear. I didn’t realize this until today, but I layer outerwear a lot! Typically layering pertains more to shirts, sweaters, cardigans, & blazers, but I tend to layer my outerwear. No harm, but if you’re going to do it…do it right.
I started with the basics. It’s cold outside so I’m actually wearing long johns. LoL A little trick I’ve been doing for years. Undetectable and oh so warm! You wouldn’t have know if I didn’t tell ya’ 😉 You’re welcome. Rockin’ my Cole Haan Zerogrand Chukkas ($278) I could have went with the wingtips or Lunargrands, but I wanted a more rugged look, my GAP, tweed dress pants ($20/sale), and my red, Merona, v-neck sweater from Target ($25). A solid look by itself. But let’s take it to another level.
First I reach for my vintage, St. John’s Bay blazer/shawl/cardigan/thinga’ ma’ jiggy’. LoL Seriously, I don’t even know what this is, but I remember purchasing because it was just so unique. I don’t even remember wear I got it, but I think it was in the ATL. The collar eliminates the need for a scarf and the over sized brown buttons are a nice eye catcher. Looks like something that belongs in London. Love it. It’s important that this piece is underneath, because it is the scarf so to speak & it is acting as my suit coat for today.
Next I reach for my GAP Denim Jacket! Perfect outward layer to house the heat of the blazer/cardigan. I’m definitely going to rock this look alone soon, but I want to push the outfit a bit more today. Now normally I pop the collar on this jacket, but I want the blazer/cardigan’s collar to shine so I won’t today. Remember, you want to draw people’s eye to specific details. Not throw it all at them at once. Michaelangelo…not Jackson Poll0ck. $40
Finally I TOP it all off with my favorite Top Coat from Express. Notice how the denim and sweater are barely noticeable, but add so much to the look. Every man needs to own tailored outerwear. You can be dressed like a straight up bum, but if you throw that tailored outerwear over the top…immediate respect. Now here’s a tip: All this outerwear is just as warm as a Bubble Coat layered, BUT together they look 10Xs better! $278
Now, you see how bright the sun is shining today, so let’s do something about these glasses.
There…that’s better.
Add in my beanie and VOILA! I’m ready to roll!
At ease gentleman. #Fin.
